Menologium of April, antique Russian icon, 12.2x10.2 in. 19th-century Russian icon depicting the Menologium of April.
The menologium is an iconographic representation of the Orthodox ecclesiastical calendar, where the saints and holidays of the month are depicted day by day. From the 10th century, these menological icons have become visual tools for catechesis, spreading the worship of saints through their images. In Russia, these icons were often displayed at the entrance of churches, on lecterns, or walls, and could be replaced monthly or be part of an annual composition.
The icon features saints and key celebrations of April, arranged in multiple tiers according to the liturgical calendar. The scene of St. George slaying the dragon stands out in the second tier, a highly recognisable and venerated image in Orthodox tradition. The saints are depicted with natural and dynamic poses, often facing each other, breaking the typical frontal style of other sacred representations.
Origin: Central Russia.
Technique: egg tempera on wood with levkas preparation.
Dimensions: 12.2x10.2 in.
Period: 19th-20th century.
This icon, with its rich visual narrative and detailed precision, is a significant example of Russian sacred art, blending devotion and iconographic tradition.
The icon comes with a certificate of authenticity, confirming its historical value and authenticity, along with an explanation of the significance of the Menologium in the Orthodox Christian liturgy.
