Antique icon from Moscow (Russia), painted in the beginning of the 19th century on a wood board of 44.5x38.5 cm, representing the Intercession of the Theotokos, in which the Virgin spreads wide her cloak to cover and protect a group of kneeling supplicants. The Pokrov icon refers to the apparition of the Virgin to Saint Andrew the Fool, where she spreads her veil over the attendance to protect it, but it's also connceted to Saint Romanos the Melodist, author of Akathistos hymn.
According to tradition, the Virgin appeared to him and made him swallow a scroll, giving him the gift of an extraordinary voice to sing the praises of the Holy Mary. This story is represented at the back of the church, top left. On the bottom, Romanos is singing for the Imperial Court, where we can see the Emperor Leo, the Empress Zoe and the Patriarch Macarius.
