Staurotheke, ancient Russian icon, wood and metal, 19th century, 40x30 cm. Ancient wood icon with three built-in metallic parts representing two crucifix and a triptych. One of the crucifix has two wood parts symbolising pieces of the cross, which give the name to the icon. The staurotheke is in fact a reliquary made to contain fragments of Christ's cross.
The crucifix are made according to the Byzantine tradition with Christ hanged with four nails on a three-arm cross with an oblique arm making the cross the Balance of Justice. At foot of the cross, we find Adam skull, symbol of the original sin redeemed thanks to Jesus' sacrifice. Above the cross, two angels wait for the body and soul of the Christ.
In each corner, there is a Marian icon: The Burning Bush in the upper left corner, The Joy of All who sorrow in the upper right one, The Softener of Evil Hearts and The Unexpected Joy on the bottom.
