The Pokrov icon is closely associated with Saint Roman the Melodist, a renowned Byzantine hymnographer who, according to tradition, received the gift of singing from the Virgin Mary.
Initially possessing a less melodious voice, Roman was visited by the Virgin, who appeared to him and instructed him to swallow a scroll. Following this command, the deacon miraculously acquired a remarkable singing ability and a talent for composition, which he dedicated to the praise of the Virgin for the remainder of his life.
