Hand-painted Romanian Crucifixion icon, antiqued style, 16x12 in.

Made by hand following the techniques of the Byzantine iconographic school, this depiction is known as the Simple Cross and occupies a central place in the iconographic tradition of liturgical spaces. The crucified Christ is portrayed not as a suffering figure but as the King of Glory: the head inclined to the right, the body slightly curved and the arms open in a gesture that evokes a universal embrace of all humanity. The posture expresses victory over death and the salvific meaning of the Cross.

The Cross stands on Mount Golgotha, whose name means "place of the skull." According to tradition, Adam, the first man, was buried here.

At the foot of the Cross is a dark cave with Adam's skull, washed by the blood flowing from Christ's wounds, symbolising the redemption of humanity. In the interpretation of the Fathers of the Church, the Cross becomes the Tree of Life, planted at the centre of the world, uniting Heaven, Earth and the Underworld and bearing the fruits of salvation, in contrast to the tree that brought about man's fall.

On the back of the icon there is a small explanatory booklet illustrating the meaning of the image, together with the iconographer's signature guaranteeing its originality and craftsmanship. The icon will be delivered in a red velvet box to ensure protection during shipment.
