This painting is characterised by the lighting technique: the characters give light, they are not illuminated by external sources of light.
The icon represents the Virgin with Child according to te image of Mother-of-God Donskaja, an icon attributed to Theophanes the Greek. The original icon, known to lead the Russians to victory against the Tartars in 1380 and to make them leave Moscow in 1591. The name comes from the Don region, where the prince of Moscow Dimitri came from, the prince who received the icon in 1380 after the battle.
