This icon was painted on wood following the Byzantine iconographic tradition, depicting the Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus. The two figures are shown with their faces close together, a gesture expressing intimacy, protection and tenderness, a characteristic element of Eastern sacred art. Devotion to Our Lady of Good Counsel (Mater Boni Consilii) grew significantly under the pontificate of Pope Leo XIII, who in 1884 officially recognised the liturgical feast and the white Scapular of Our Lady of Good Counsel, granting indulgences.
The icon is connected to the Sanctuary of Genazzano and its diffusion around the world was promoted by the Augustinians and the many pilgrims who, over the centuries, have carried the image as a sign of faith and devotion.
The icon is supplied in an elegant red presentation box designed to ensure protection during transport and storage. On the back of the icon a certificate of authenticity signed by the iconographer is applied, accompanied by a brief note explaining its origin and spiritual significance.
