All-Seeing Eye, modern Russian icon, hand-painted, 12x10 in.

This icon represents one of the most intricate symbolic structures, where the Lord is symbolised as the sun, the source of light, and divine knowledge is represented by the eye, the All-Seeing Eye of God. At the centre of the icon is the circle from which four rays radiate, surrounded by a large circle with images of the evangelists or their symbols.

A second circle simulates the human face with four eyes, a nose, and lips, bearing the inscription celebrating the magnificence of the Lord. Above, the Virgin Mary is depicted with her hands raised. The third circle, crossed by thick rays, embodies the Sun of Truth, Jesus Christ, accompanied by inscriptions inviting to seek his protection. The fourth, and largest circle, shows a starry sky with three seraphim and words identifying them as the word of God.

At the top, a semicircle represents the Heaven of Heavens, with three seraphim around the blessing Lord of Hosts. From the Lord the Holy Spirit descends on the Virgin Mary in the form of a dove. In the four corners of the icon, between the third and fourth circles, we find the symbols of the evangelists: Matthew as an angel, Mark as an eagle, Luke as an ox, and John as a lion, each representing different aspects of the gospel message.
