Hand-painted Russian Christ Pantocrator icon in Palekh style, 12x10 in.
This Russian-origin icon, painted on wood, depicts Christ Pantocrator, one of the most iconic representations in the Orthodox tradition. Christ is shown in full length, seated frontally on a throne, in a solemn and blessing posture. In his left hand, he holds the Gospel open, while with his right hand, he makes a blessing gesture following the Orthodox/Byzantine rite. The halo surrounding his head is decorated with Greek letters meaning "the One who is", a symbol of his divinity. Christ's face is expressive, conveying the depth of the mystery of the incarnate God. His distinctive features, like centrally parted hair falling on the nape, a broad forehead, and a serious and attentive expression, are typical of the representation of Christ Pantocrator. The icon also depicts Our Lady of the Sign in the upper left corner and Saint John the Apostle in the upper right corner, enriching the composition with key figures of the Christian faith.
This representation has been chosen by the Orthodox Church to allow the faithful to read and reflect on significant passages from the open Gospel, emphasising the connection between the scripture and the figure of Christ.
