In the city of Suja, in the region of Smolensk, between 1654 and 1655 this Marian icon became popular with the combination of the two geographical names.
At the time there was a horrible epidemics, and the faithful parishioners of the city wanted an icon to be painted in honour of the Mother of God of Smolensk with which they would go along the streets during processions.
The Virgin put an end to the epidemics of plague.

In this icon the Virgin is holding a foot of the son, who, with his right hand, is blessing her and holding the Holy Writing.
The day of this icon is traditionally the 28th of July, but it is also celebrated locally on the 11th of July and on the 2nd of November.
Hand-painted in Russia following the traditions of the Russian iconography.
Coated with gold leaves on linden wood.
