The Marian Dormition is the most important celebration of the Christian East and it corresponds to the celebration of the Assumption of Mary in the western culture.
In the icon Gabriel announces to Mary her death; she asks to see the Apostles, she prays on the Mount of Olives and makes her funeral bed. It is then that the Apostles gather together in Jerusalem for the Lamentation.
