This image symbolises the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary by the Holy Spirit and therefore the virginity of the Madonna before, during, and after the Nativity.
Another interpretation that can be given to the image of the Burning Bush concerns the unconditional purity of the Mother of God, which remained intact despite being born on sinful land. Popular belief holds that this icon protects the homes of those who adore it from fire.
According to an eyewitness, during a large fire, only one wooden house was not engulfed by flames. Next to it was a woman holding the icon in her hands. Despite tears on her face and concern for others, her expression showed absolute calmness and unwavering faith.
There are different depictions of the Burning Bush, but most of the time, as in this icon, it is represented with an octagonal star with the Mother of God in the centre. The star consists of two squares, one red to recall the colour of flames and the other green, reminiscent of the bush. Also noted are a man, an eagle, an ox, and a lion, the symbols mentioned in the Apocalypse by John the Theologian. Next to them in the circle are the Archangels: Michael, Raphael, Uriel, Selaphiel, Barachiel, and Gabriel. The Virgin is represented holding the Child and a ladder in her hands touching her shoulder, a sign that she has lifted humanity from earth to Heaven.
