Ancient Russian icon of St. Nicholas, 18th century, restored, 12x10 in. The relics of Saint Nicholas, born in Patara in 280, bishop of Myra, were brought from Lycia to Bari in 1807. Saint Nicholas is known for his opposition against the heretic bishop Arius, which causes him to be temporally defrocked and imprisoned. He was then released by the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ.
