Ancient triptych of the Deesis with riza, second half of the 19th century, Russia, 10.4x12.4 inches. Set of three ancient gilded icons of 14.4x12.4 inches each, representing the Deesis, an iconographic theme whose name comes from the greek for "supplication, prayer".
This triptych of icons with gilded riza represents Jesus Christ blessing the audience, flanked by the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Baptist, who are in supplication on behalf of humanity. The icons were painted in the second half of the 19th century in the typical style of the Moscow school.
The representation of the Deesis is often the central part of the iconostasis in Orthodox churches and can be accompanied by figures of other saints and angels. The Virgin Mary and John the Baptist are chosen as first witnesses of Christ's divinity and they also intercede for humanity in the representations of the Last Judgment.
These three icons, fully painted, are enriched with a riza, decorated and chiseled by hand and placed over the painting to show only the faces and the hands of the subjects.
The icons are painted with egg tempera on a linden wood board and are delivered in elegant satin and velvet cases with the expertise of a registered expert.
