Russian painted icon of the Mother of God "Joy of All Who Sorrow", 5.5x3.9 inches. This icon depicts a typical theme of the iconography of the 18th and 19th century, known in western religious art as Mother of Mercy.
In 1643, the original icon was brought to the Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration. Thanks to this very icon, the sister of the Patriarch Joachim recovered from her illness in 1688.
From that moment, the icon became a popular place of pilgrimage.
The icon is devided in two: the upper part represents the crowned Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus, surrounded by angels and saints, on which she spreads her mantle of protection, while on the bottom of the painting we can see the angels clothing the naked, leading the blind and showing the way to the lost ones.
On the top of the icon is depicted God Almighty.
This icon is a faithful reproduction of the original of the 19th century, painted by hand on linden wood covered in gold leaf.
The painting is delivered in an elegant wooden box.
