The origin of Christmas balls dates back to the mid-nineteenth century, when a drought caused a village in northern France to run out of the apples they used to adorn Christmas trees with. A local glassblower came up with the idea of making coloured glass balls to replace the apples and not deprive children of the joy of having a beautifully decorated Christmas tree.
