The painting
This work portrays the Madonna with Child, both with decorated halos. The Virgin Mary wears a red cloak and a gold-embroidered veil, while tenderly holding the Baby Jesus, who plays with an ornate cross. In his left hand, the Child holds a pomegranate, a symbol of resurrection and eternal life, often used in Christian art to represent the promise of eternal life through Christ's sacrifice. The use of vivid colours and gold details gives the image a solemn and precious quality.
