Liturgy of the hours

What is the Liturgy of the Hours and how is it prayed?

The Liturgy of the Hours is the official prayer of the Catholic Church, celebrated daily to accompany the faithful in the various moments of the day. Comprising psalms, readings, and prayers, the Liturgy of the Hours is a tool for meditation that unites the community in prayer and connects it to the universal liturgical rhythm. The prayer takes place at specific times of the day, called Canonical Hours, and can be recited in groups or individually, making it accessible to religious, laypeople, and faithful worldwide.

How is the Liturgy of the Hours divided?

The Liturgy of the Hours is divided into various prayer times called Canonical Hours, marking the different moments of the day. The main prayers are Lauds, recited at dawn to start the day with devotion; Daytime Prayer, which includes Terce, Sext, and None, to pause in the day for moments of reflection; Vespers, the evening prayer that celebrates the end of the day; and Compline, recited before going to rest. This division helps maintain a spiritual rhythm throughout the day, transforming every moment into an encounter with God.

How many books are in the Liturgy of the Hours?

The Liturgy of the Hours is generally available in two main formats: the four-volume version, which follows the entire liturgical year with a volume dedicated to each period, and the single-volume version, which gathers all the Canonical Hours in one book, ideal for those seeking a compact solution. In addition to these, there are pocket editions that make it easier to carry prayer wherever you go. Each format is designed to meet the different needs of the faithful and religious, always ensuring a comprehensive and accurate guide to daily prayer.
