This icon depicts the Calvary with Christ crucified, accompanied by Mary, Saint John, the Myrrh-bearing women, and the centurion Longinus. The body of Jesus, fixed with four nails and with the head inclined to the right, expresses majestic serenity, following Byzantine iconography that portrays not agony but the regality of the Redeemer. At the foot of the cross, Adam's skull bathed in Christ's blood symbolises humanity's redemption.
The scene also includes the Old Jerusalem in decline and the New Jerusalem, a reference to the victory of life over death and the hope of resurrection.
