Ancient Russian icon, Mother of God Shui-Smolenskaya, 19th century, 14x12 in.
Ancient Russian icon depicting the Shui-Smolenskaya Mother of God.
Between 1654 and 1655, in the city of Shuya, near Vladimir, in the Smolensk region, this icon became famous for miraculously stopping a terrible epidemic.
Commissioned by a devout believer, it contributed miraculously to healing, especially the sick who turned to her for help.
The Virgin holds the Child on her left arm, who has his right hand raised in a blessing gesture.
An iconic detail: with his left hand, the child touches his bare foot; his right leg is strongly raised, and he places his foot on his left knee. This particular position of the Child expresses a childlike and spontaneous attitude that contrasts with the static nature of the "Hodegetria" type and the oriental spirit, aiming for a depiction free from earthly human attitudes.
The icon is delivered in a blue case and accompanied by an evaluation conducted by a specialised expert.
Origin: Northern Russia.
