Ancient Russian icon of Christ Cosmokrator, 18th-19th century, 22.2x15 in.
This icon depicts Jesus in full figure, frontal and solemn, in the act of blessing according to the Orthodox-Byzantine rite. With his right hand he blesses the faithful, while in his left hand he holds the universe, symbol of his divine authority. The halo bears the traditional Greek letters "He who is", testifying to the eternal nature of Christ. The intensely expressive face represents the mystery of God made man, with features typical of the Pantokrator: hair parted in the middle and falling down the back of the neck, a broad forehead, marked eyebrows, deep, contemplative eyes, an elongated nose, thin lips and small ears, a sign of listening.
This version favours the cosmic representation, while in other icons Christ is portrayed with the open Gospel, to allow the faithful to read sacred phrases, according to the tradition of the Orthodox Church.
