Ancient Russian icon depicting the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor with other scenes on each side, dating back to the 20th century.
Traditionally part of the Twelve Feasts of the liturgical year, the Transfiguration is often the first icon an iconographer creates at the start of their artistic career.
The central scene of the icon portrays Christ's Transfiguration on Mount Tabor in bright attire as described in the Gospel of Matthew. Christ is depicted against a triple background: the outer circle symbolises the cloud where God spoke to Moses, the inner darkness represents the darkness of faith, with its light signifying the closeness to God.
Rays point upwards (towards angelic hosts) and three downwards towards the apostles. Elijah is on the left, while Moses, holding a book, is on the right.
The six scenes on the sides depict: Moses with the burning bush, St. George and the dragon, Jesus in Gethsemane, St. Nicholas of Mozhaysk with a sword in his right hand and a city in his left, and other saints.
Delivered in an elegant blue case, accompanied by an expert appraisal.
