Antique 19th-century Russian Orthodox bronze crucifix with enamel, 9x5.5 in.

A refined expression of the Eastern European iconographic tradition, this Russian Orthodox crucifix in bronze with coloured enamels can be dated to the early 19th century. The cross follows the characteristic three-bar structure, the lowest bar slanted — a symbol of the “scales of justice”: on one side the good thief welcomed into Paradise, on the other the impenitent thief turned away from salvation.

The lower register develops rich theological symbolism: the fallen Old Jerusalem contrasts with the New Jerusalem, while at the base Mount Golgotha is depicted with Adam’s skull, a sign of humanity’s redemption through Christ’s sacrifice. The engraved inscriptions recall the salvific meaning of the Cross, where “the place of the Crucified becomes Paradise”.

The iconography is particularly detailed and includes, alongside the central Crucifixion, Gospel scenes such as the Annunciation, the Adoration of the Magi, the Entry into Jerusalem and the Trinity, all finely modelled in relief and enriched by decorative motifs.

The polychrome enamels lend luminosity and depth to the surface, enhancing every detail of the composition.

In the Eastern tradition Christ is represented with regal nobility — not in the agony of suffering but in the glory of his victory over death — making this crucifix both an artistic object and a powerful instrument for spiritual contemplation.

The piece is accompanied by an expert report from an iconographic specialist and is preserved in an elegant blue velvet case, attesting to its authenticity and collector’s value.
