Antique icon from Russia, 19th century, Virgin Mary in Deesis. Antique icon of the mid-19th century from Central Russia, painted with egg tempera on a thick wood board of 54x43.5 cm, representing the Virgin Mary of the Deesis.
The Deesis generally consists of Christ in Majesty flanked by the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Baptist, in supplication on behalf of humanity.
