The spread of St. George's worship is confirmed by historical and archaeological sources. According to tradition, the saint was martyred under the Persian emperor Dacian, who sentenced him to death for declaring himself a Christian after gathering sovereigns to oppose Christians. The legend of St. George saving a maiden from the dragon, enriched with mythological elements, became one of the most popular iconographic themes. It depicts the saint on horseback killing the dragon, with the liberated princess approaching him, while sovereigns and parents observe the scene from the city walls. Above, the blessing Christ appears, symbolising divine grace. Saint George, patron of numerous cities, particularly Moscow, is revered as a protector in the fight against evil, enemies of body or spirit. His protection was invoked against enemy assaults, diseases, and livestock (especially horses); his feast on April 23 coincided with spring propitiatory rites celebrating life triumphing over winter's death.
