Antique icon, St. George defeats the Dragon, Russia, 18th century. Antique icon from Central Russia of the 18th century painted on a thick levkas-wood board of 26.5x22 cm.
This icon represents Saint George in his glorious golden armour on a white horse, thrusting the dragon with a lance. According to the legend a monster was living in a pond near Silene and, in order to satisfy its appetite, the villagers were sacrificing sheeps and, after that, young people chossen randomly. But on day, it was the king's daughter turn and in that very moment Saint George appeared and heroically killed the creature. After that, all the citizens were ready to be baptised.
