The Catholic doctrine of the Assumption of the Mother of God states that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was taken to heaven with body and soul at the moment of her death, also known as Dormition. According to this belief, Mary was welcomed into Paradise, next to her Son and God the Father. The absence of a known burial place for Mary, which would otherwise have attracted millions of pilgrims and led to the construction of a large shrine, is seen as indirect evidence that her body was assumed into heaven.
In Byzantine art, Mary is often depicted on her deathbed, surrounded by the Apostles, with Christ holding her soul, symbolised by a swaddled baby, while angels receive her.
