The icon is celebrated on 8 July and 22 October. Considered the city's unseen protector, the painting was traditionally carried in procession around the city walls.
During the Second World War a procession with the icon was held around the walls of besieged Leningrad.
Iconographically, the Mother of God of Kazan is a variant of the Hodegetria type, notable for the Infant Jesus depicted standing.
