Antique Russian icon of Assuage My Sorrows, 19th century 30x20 cm. Icon from Moscow of the 19th century, painted with egg tempera on wood and levkas, representing the Mother of God "Assuage My Sorrows" from the hymn Akathistos.
In this icon, the Virgin is represented as deeply pained, already aware of the injustice of her Son's death and of the years of solitude after His sacrifice. She takes on her shoulders all humanity's sorrows, emphasized by the scroll, saying "Judge in according to justice, act with mercy and magnanimity". The Virgin's suffering is represented also in her posture, with an hand on her forehead, and in the Child's position, floating without being supported by his mother arm.
