This miraculous icon was discovered in Kazan on July 8, 1579, following an apparition of the Virgin to a young girl. This image is one of Russia's most venerated icons. In 1612, it accompanied Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky in the liberation of Moscow from the Poles, becoming the protector of the Romanov dynasty.
Its liturgical feasts are celebrated on July 8, the day of the apparition, and on October 22 for the liberation of Moscow. Over time, it was also honoured in St. Petersburg, where the famous Kazan Cathedral was dedicated to it on Nevsky Prospect. This icon also played a significant role during the wars of 1812 and the Second World War, where processions with the icon invoked divine protection.
Small in size like the original, this version belongs to the iconographic type Hodegetria, depicting the Mother of God with the Child in an upright position. A symbol of protection and intercession, this image is one of the strongest emblems of the Russian Orthodox faith.
