Antique Russian icon of Saint Nicholas of Myra, 19th century, 11x9 in.

This precious icon depicts Saint Nicholas, the bishop of Myra, born in Patara in 280 and passed away between 345 and 352, one of the most beloved figures in the Christian world, from Europe to the Greek-Slavic realm. He participated in the Council of Nicaea, where he vehemently opposed Arian heresy: according to tradition, Christ and the Virgin appeared to him, restoring his freedom and episcopal dignity after his arrest.

From the 10th to the 13th century, his Byzantine iconography was enriched in Russia with local episodes, such as the rescue on the Dnieper River.

In this icon, he is depicted half-length, wearing his episcopal vestments and an omophorion adorned with crosses, blessing with the Gospel in hand. The features - high and wrinkled forehead, intense eyes, short beard - convey the strength of the defender of the faith, exorcist, and healer.

The panel originates from a sacred place in the Choluy region, a renowned icon trading centre, and due to its size, it was destined for a church or monastery, not for domestic use. The flanking saints testify to the original commission.

Origin: Greece.

Technique: egg tempera.

Materials: wood - levkas.

Dimensions: 11x8.9 in.

Era: 1827.

The icon will be shipped in an elegant dark blue velvet case with satin interior, accompanied by an expert-signed certificate, attesting to its authenticity and detailing the iconographic elements.
