Antique Russian icon on board depicting Saints Florus and Laurus, Saint Modestus, Saint Blaise, Archangel Michael, and other selected saints. Florus and Laurus, protectors of horses, lived between Byzantium and Illyria. Known for their faith, they performed healing miracles and, refusing to sacrifice to the gods, endured martyrdom. Saint Blaise and Saint Modestus are venerated as patrons of livestock, while Archangel Michael, a celestial warrior and defender of the faith, leads the angelic hosts and ferries the souls of the righteous in the Last Judgment. At the top, the icon features the Acheiropoieta Saviour, an image not painted by human hands, typical of the Old Believers' tradition.
The composition, dominated by warm and deep tones, expresses the sacrifice and victory of faith, likely commissioned by a family linked to pastoral life.
