Antique Russian icon, Our Lady of Kazan, 17th-18th century, honourific embroidery, bead flower, 12x10 in.

This revered icon was rediscovered in Kazan on July 8, 1579, after the Virgin Mary appeared to a young girl, revealing the location where it had been hidden during the Tartar invasion. In 1612, a copy of it accompanied Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky in the liberation of Moscow from the Polish, becoming the protector of the Romanov dynasty and one of Russia's most cherished relics.

The main liturgical festivities are celebrated on July 8 for the apparition and on October 22 for the liberation of Moscow, traditionally marked by solemn processions. In the 18th century, Our Lady of Kazan was proclaimed the patroness of St. Petersburg, where the magnificent Kazan Cathedral was dedicated to her on Nevsky Prospekt. Her protection was also sought during the war of 1812 and the siege of Leningrad in World War II.

Small in size like the original, this icon belongs to the type of Hodegetria, depicting the Mother of God in half-bust with the Child in an upright position, a widely spread iconographic model from the 16th century.

Origin: Moscow, Russia.

Technique: egg tempera.

Materials: wood-levkas.

Measurements: 12.2x10.2 in.

Period: 17th-18th century.

The icon will be shipped in an elegant blue velvet box lined with satin, accompanied by an expert appraisal certifying its authenticity and explaining the significance of the images.
