Antique Russian icon, Our Lady of Korsun, 19th century, 13x11 in.
Antique Russian icon depicting the Mother of God of Korsun, also known as Our Lady of Caresses, belonging to the Greek iconographic type Glykophilousa (Virgin of Tenderness).
In this representation the faces of the Virgin and the Child are closely set in a gesture of deep intimacy, expressing the bond of love between Mother and Son and emotionally involving the observer.
The composition is cropped just below the shoulders, a typical choice of this iconography that focuses attention on the expressiveness of the faces. Subtle lead‑white highlights around the eyes and the delicate facial brushwork emphasise the spiritual dimension of the image.
The hands, deliberately elongated and painted in lighter tones, join in a harmonious gesture that accompanies the intensity of the gaze and underlines the affectionate relationship between the Virgin and the Child.
The icon is hand‑painted in egg tempera on an antique wood panel prepared with levkas, following the Russian iconographic tradition. It is accompanied by an expert appraisal and an elegant blue velvet case.
Provenance: Northern Russia.
Technique: egg tempera.
Materials: wood with levkas preparation.
Dimensions: 13x10.6 in.
