This old Russian icon on a wooden board, embellished with embedded bronzes, is known as a Staurotheque, a reliquary intended to safeguard fragments of the Cross of Christ.

In the centre, St. John the Baptist, the Precursor of Christ, is depicted, while the upper band portrays the main events in the life of Jesus and the Virgin: Trinity of the New Testament, Exaltation of the Cross, Presentation at the Temple, Baptism of Jesus, Entry into Jerusalem, Transfiguration, Pentecost, Ascension, Dormition of Mary, and Descent into Hell.
