The tradition of travel icons, small and light, made of metal, wood, porcelain, or pressed paper, spread in Russia from the 15th century. These images, dedicated to sacred subjects such as the Crucifix, the Acheiropoieta Christ, the Virgin Mary, the Holy Trinity, and the Saints, were intended to accompany the faithful everywhere as a sign of protection.

The tradition of travel icons, small and light, made of metal, wood, porcelain, or pressed paper, spread in Russia from the 15th century. These images, dedicated to sacred subjects such as the Crucifix, the Acheiropoieta Christ, the Virgin Mary, the Holy Trinity, and the Saints, were intended to accompany the faithful everywhere as a sign of protection.
Up to the 17th century, bronze and copper were mainly used, while from the 18th century brass and silver were added, often enriched with coloured enamels. The most common forms included simple crucifixes or those with side icons, tablets, diptychs, triptychs, and polyptychs. Wooden versions were made from hard and seasoned woods for over a century to ensure maximum resistance to moisture over time.
