Monumental ancient Russian icon of the Mother of God, 18th-19th century, 35x24 in.

This miraculous ancient icon, known as "Quick to Hear", is venerated in the Athonite monastery of Dochiar, where its beneficial power was first revealed.

In the mid-17th century, the icon was placed in a niche on the outer wall near the entrance to the monastery refectory. A monk named Nil, responsible for the refectory service, frequently passed by the sacred image, often carrying a lit torch whose smoke obscured the icon.

One day, as he passed by as usual, Nil heard a voice coming from the icon admonishing him: he should no longer pass with the lit torch to avoid damaging the sacred image. Convinced it was a joke by a fellow monk, the monk ignored the warning and continued his behaviour as before.

Shortly after, while passing in front of the icon again, a second voice severely rebuked him. Nil immediately lost his sight.

Deeply shaken and repentant, he knelt before the icon of the Most Holy Mother of God and prayed all night, begging for forgiveness. In the morning, the brothers who learned of the incident were impressed by the miracle: from that day on, they decided to always keep a votive lamp lit in front of the icon and to burn incense every evening as a sign of devotion.

Nil, with unwavering hope and faith, decided not to leave the icon until he obtained forgiveness and healing. His prayer was soon answered.

One day, kneeling in front of the sacred image, he heard the voice of the Mother of God again:

"I will intercede for all who come to Me with reverence; their prayers will be granted by My Son and My God out of love for My intercession. From now on, this icon of Mine will be called "Quick to Hear", because I will quickly manifest mercy and aid to all who faithfully turn to Me".

At that moment, Nil regained his sight. Since then, the Mother of God has kept Her promise, bestowing comfort and assistance to all who sincerely rely on Her.
