This oeuvre represents the Virgin with the Infant Jesus holding a scroll in one hand, symbol of God's word, and blessing the audience with the other. This iconographic depiction belongs to the Hodegetria type, representing one of the most ancient images of the Mother of God. It was said that the first Hodegetria icon was painted by the first iconographer ever, Saint Luke the Evangelist.
