Russian antique traveling icon of the All-Seeing Eye, 19th century, 4x4 in.
Originating from the Russian Old Believers communities, this icon dates back to the 17th century when they rejected the liturgical reform of Patriarch Nikon, preserving the ancient ritual. Not recognised by the Orthodox Church, this image stands out for its highly allegorical character, portraying God the Father anthropomorphically, a feature not allowed in canonical iconography.
The subject combines two biblical prophecies: the messianic announcement from Isaiah 7:14 (The Virgin will conceive and give birth to a Son, Immanuel), forming the basis of the Icon of the Mother of God of the Sign; the vision of Isaiah 6 where a seraph cleanses the prophet by touching his lips with a burning coal.
At the centre of the icon, enclosed in a cosmic medallion, appears Christ Immanuel in a blessing posture with a scroll in his left hand, surrounded by circles representing the universe. The four Evangelists are depicted in medallions at the four corners.
