Russian icon of the Pantocrator, painted in the 19th c., 12x10.6 inches. Icon from central Russia painted with egg tempera on wood at the beginning of the 19th century, representing the Christ Pantocrator.
The icon represents one of the most classic of Christ's icons, Christ Pantocrator, wher Jesus is depicted in a blessing position, facing the viewer, with a very expressive face. He holds an open Gospel in his left hand, for the viewer to read, and has Greek letters in his halo designating him as "the One who is". In this type of icon, the features of Jesus' face are always similar: long hair parted in the middle, large forehead with well-marked eyebrow arches, big eyes, deep and thoughtful, divided by a long nose, tight red lips closed in wise silence, small ears, almost a bit deformed, in a listening mood.
