Russian wood Byzantine crucifix, 18th century 26.4x14.8 cm. Byzantine crucifix made of wood and levkas, painted with egg tempera in the 18th century in Moscow.
The crucifix presents a dark red background emphasizing the body of Christ, represented with royal attitude and ascetism typical of Byzantine style. Unlike Wenstern iconography, Jesus Christ is here portrayed cruficied by four nails and the cross has a third slanted crossbeam, symbolising the cross as a balance of justice.
