St George and the Dragon antique icon XIX century, 42x34x2 cm.
Icon depicting "Saint George and the dragon", dates back to the 19th century. In the center of the icon, there is Saint George on his white horse as he pierces the dragon. In the background, the stylised walls of the city from which the two sovereigns and the now free princess who comes to meet the warrior saint attend the scene. Above is visible the celestial sphere from which the blessing Christ appears as a symbol of divine grace aimed at assisting those who fight against evil. The cult like status of St george is attested by literary and archaeological documents which testify to the martyrdom suffered by the warrior saint under Dacian emperor of Persia who after countless torments condemns him to be beheaded. Saint George is revered as the heavenly protector in the fight against evil, the enemies of the body and spirit and is precisely the patron of many cities. He is celebrated on April 23 in parallel with the spring rites that celebrate the triumph of life after the death of winter.
