Transfiguration on the Mount Tabor, antique Russian icon, 17th century, 14x11.8 inches. Antique Russian icon painted on wood with tempera and golden details in Moscow at the end of the 17th century, still in perfect condition.
The icon depicts the Transfiguration on the Mount Tabor, an event that, according to tradition, took place 40 days before the Crucifixion. The celebration linked to this event is very old and spread during the 5th century.
The icon is part of the cycle of the twelve feasts and, traditionnaly, is one of the first icons that an iconographer paints at the beginning of his career.
In the top centre of the icon, Jesus is represented with snow-white clothes on a triple background: an outer circle representing the cloud where God talked to Moses and an inner darker part symbolising the darkness.
Elijah is on Jesus' left side, while Moses is on his right, a book in his hands; both are barefoot because Tabor soil is considered sacred as Mount Sinai.
