Twelve great feasts, ancient Russian icon, 19th century, 12.2x10.4 inches. This icon from Moscow, dating back to the beginning of the 19th century, represents the Twelve Great Feasts of the Orthodox church.
The Twelve Feasts are the main celebrations of the Orthodox liturgical year. Some of them are celebrated on a fixed date, as the Nativity of the Theotokos, the Elevation of the Holy Cross, the Ascension and the Pentecost. However, the Russian iconographic gradually added four other feasts, equally important according to the Holy Scriptures. Some iconographic schemes grouping in one representation the cycle of the twelve feasts began to be developped after the 18th century, especially in Russia.
The feasts represented are: the Holy Trinity of the Old Testament, the Nativity of the Theotokos, the presentation of the Theotokos, the Annonciation, the Nativity of Jesus, the presentation of Jesus, the Baptism, the Transfiguration, the Palm Sunday, the Ascension of Christ, the Dormition of the Theotokos and the Elevation of the Holy Cross.
