Unburnt Bush antique Russian icon of the Mother of God, 19th century, 12x10 in.
This icon is named after the miracle of the unburnt bush recounted in the book of Exodus, where Moses saw a bush burning without being consumed and heard God revealing His name as "I am who I am" and the mission to free the people of Israel.
According to tradition, the flames represented the divine, eternal, and incorruptible glory, foreshadowing the transfiguration of Christ. The Church, since the Greek Fathers of the 5th century, interprets this sign in a Christological and Marian key: the fire symbolises divinity, the bush represents humanity. Just as the bush is not consumed, the Virgin Mary conceived and bore the Son of God without losing her purity, becoming the dwelling place of the Incarnation. The Byzantine and Roman liturgies embrace this prophetic reading "As the bush that Moses saw burning unharmed, so is your virginity intact, Mother of God". The "Unburnt bush" icon thus celebrates Mary as a living sign of the mystery of the Incarnation, where divinity unites with humanity without consuming it.
