The iconography of Giovanni Damasceno is based on the legend according to which the emperor Leo III, to punish him for his strenuous defense of the sacred images, ordered to cut off his right hand, which was then hung to the gates of Damascus. John begged the Mother of God of his icon for his hand to return and this happened. As a token of gratitude, he applied a third hand to the icon.
