Antique Russian icon Laudation of the Theotokos, restored, 19th century, 32x26 cm. Russian icon of the Czarist era, made of wood levkas of the 19th century and hand-painted with egg tempera according to traditional iconographic technique of the Orthodox art by Russian artists.
This icon, called Laudation of the Holy Theotokos, shows Mary on a throne surrounded by prophets who are presenting to her their visions on scrolls. The Mother of God is portayed with the Cild in her arms, an inscription under her throne saying "The prophets have announced you from above".
The prophets represented in this icon are Jacob, Moses, Aaron, Gideon, David, Solomon, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Habakkuk and Zechariah.
