This icon is dedicated to the Mother of God of the Three Hands and tells the story of John Damascene, whose right hand was cut off as a punishment for a false accusation.
After regaining his hand at the caliph's concession, John began to pray. The Virgin Mary appeared to him, announcing his healing. Overjoyed, he built and attached a silver hand below the miraculous image.
He later became a monk and took the icon with him to the monastery. Subsequently, the sacred object was gifted to the archbishop of Serbia, where another miraculous event occurred. In an attempt to save the icon from the Turkish invasion, the faithful placed it on a donkey which wandered until it reached Mount Athos, near the Hilandar Monastery.
Since then, the monks of the Hilandar Monastery, who took the icon, only elect the vicar, as during a discussion on who should become the parish priest, the Virgin Mary indicated that she should be chosen.
As a tradition, the monks receive blessings directly from the icon.
