Christ on the cross, Russian icon, repainted on antique board, 19th century, 30x25 cm. Russian icon of the Moscow School of Painting of the Golden Ring, repainted on the second half of the 19th century on an old wood board and representing Jesus Christ on the cross.
The cross is made of a vertical arm and three cross bars. On the upper one we find the inscription "Jesus Christ King of the Jews (INBI in Greek or INRI in Latin). Above Jesus' head, the initials IC and XC, the firsts and the lasts of Jesus Christ name in Greek. The central cross bar is where Jesus's hands are nailed and the bottom one is for his feet.
The inclination of the bottom bar has a symbolic mean, representing the Ascension of Christ and the concept of the Cross as Balance of Justice.
The body of the Christ is nailed to the cross with four nails, not three as in the Western iconography.
At Christ's feet, is depicted Adam's skull, symbol of the whole humanity, redeemed from original sin thanks to his sacrifice.
On the left, stand the Mother of God with the other women, while on the right we find Saint John and a centurion.
The icon board is from the 19th century, measuring 31x27 cm, made of wood and levkas (plaster, sturgeon oil and linseed oil) and painted with egg tempera. The board was then repainted by restorers in the 20th century.
