Hand-painted antique Russian icon of the Mother of God of Tichvin, restored with gold frame, 10x12 in. The icon of the Mother of God of Tichvin is one of the most famous sacred images in Russia. Its first recorded appearance near Novgorod was in 1383. This icon follows the Hodegetria style, where the Virgin Mary points to the Infant Jesus, symbolising the path to Christ as the way to salvation. A distinctive feature of this particular icon is Christ's gesture of blessing his mother with his right hand. It is believed that the first iconographer to paint an Hodegetria image was Saint Luke the Evangelist, making these representations among the oldest and most venerable images of the Mother of God.
